You know I love a good uniform story, but even I find it hard to swallow this one.

Look, nobody is going to mistake these for Nike Pro Combat uniforms, that’s for sure. But the design that Adidas has in mind for Michigan throwback uniforms leaves plenty to be desired. Than again, what exactly would you want Adidas to do with Michiagn’s uniform, which has been more or less iconic and the same for a long time?

Perhaps just making the front of the winged helmet design thicker? Even in the 1960’s the Wolverines looked fairly similar to how they dress today, so you have to dig back deeper in the history of Michigan football to find somethign to work with. The design above is apparently inspired by uniforms from the Big Chill hockey uniforms worn by the men’s hockey team last winter.

Michigan will not be confirming their special uniform for the prime time showdown with Notre Dame on September 10 until later this summer, and Notre Dame’s uniform will be confirmed at a later time as well. Brian Kelly has said that the Notre Dame uniforms will relect the early 1960’s style, leading many to hope that a shamrock design is placed on the helmet.

Adidas, who is the uniform provider for each university, is designing both school’s uniforms for the game.

What do you think about the possible uniform design for Michigan?
