This fall FOX Sports is trumping up their college football coverage through FX and the main network in addition to the FOX Sports networks across the country. But to have a top-tier broadcast you have to have top-tier announcers. When it comes to finding an analyst to talk about the game, it does not get much better than Charles Davis, who will join the animated and enthusiastic Gus Johnson in the television booth this fall covering games in the Big 12, Pac-12 and more.

The two media figures were brought together for the first time this week to meet in person and Davis commented on how much he is looking forward to working with Johnson this fall on the podcast. But while I had Davis on I figured I had to take advantage and ask him about some of the bigger stories in college football. What does he think about the idea of paying players? As you might expect, when he was a player he was in favor of it, but now he has grown and matured on his view of the debate to pay players or not. Davis sides on the value of a scholarship both on the field and in the classroom.

We also discuss whether or not the NCAA should get more involved with mandated recruiting rules or if it is best left to individual conferences and universities. His response may surprise you. And what about his own Alma mater (Tennessee) and their current search for an athletics director? Does Davis have any suggestions for who should take over the job? He is monitoring the situation closely but seems to just want to have someone take over who is capable and willing to do a good job in the vacant position in Knoxville.

Davis also confirmed which games he and his new television partner will be covering to start the season. The season begins with Johnson and Davis calling the action for Oklahoma’s home game against Tulsa, followed by a trip to Eugene, Oregon to call Oregon vs. Nevada. Then it is down south to see USC take on Syracuse and then it is back to Norman to call Oklahoma vs. Missouri in a Big 12 match-up. Those games will all air on the FX Network.
