This day in college football history: Kickoff Classic nailbiter

Tennessee edges Iowa in Giants Stadium

On this day in 1987…

The 5th Annual Kickoff Classic saw its first down-to-the-wire finish as No. 17 Tennessee downed College Football Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry and No. 16 Iowa 23-22 in East Rutherford, N.J. The Volunteers grabbed a 14-10 third quarter lead when linebacker Darrin Miller returned a fumble 96 yards for a score. The Hawkeyes raced back into the lead, scoring nine straight points but failed to convert a two-point conversion, opening the door for Tennessee’s comeback. Freshman tailback Reggie Cobb led the Volunteers with a 142-yard performance in his debut.
