Florida International student beat reporter Luis Gutierrez
We all know that Mario Cristobal has developed quite the coaching profile in recent years. His dedication to establishing and building the Golden Panthers is commendable for so many reasons, especially when other positions have seemed to have his name practically on the office door at Rutgers and Pittsburgh. You can say that Cristobal is in the same boat as Boise State’s Chris Petersen in that they are committed to their programs in an era when most are looking for the next big job.
Maybe in time Cristobal will move on to a new challenge. Maybe he will not. Whatever he ends up doing though, he will be respected for the work he has done at Florida International.
The Golden Panthers enter this season having gained the respect of their conference foes. The Sun Belt Conference coaches poll put FIU on top this preseason, narrowly getting by Arkansas State with new head coach Gus Malzahn generating some serious interest. With FIU playing their final year in the Sun Belt Conference, I wanted to reach out to bring in a voice following the team. Introducing Luis Gutierrez, a student reporter serving as the beat reporter for Florida International’s student newspaper, The Beacon.
Gutierrez and I recap some of the highlights from Sun Belt media day, which was held Monday and quickly overshadowed by the three-day affair that is SEC Media Days. After touching briefly on some of the schools in the Sun Belt, we talk a little more about Cristobal and his impact and influence at FIU. With a move to Conference USA coming up in 2013, can FIU catch up quickly and be able to compete as they step up a level in competition?
