The Latest Top 25, Week 13

We are coming down the home stretch of the college football season. Alabama and Florida State remain on top of my rankings this week, but Ohio State stands firm in my third place slot just itching to wiggle in to the top two. My preseason prediction of Alabama-Ohio State in the BCS championship is still in play, and I still say the story-lines and hype for an Alabama-Ohio State BCS championship game would dwarf one involving Florida State. I don’t think the gap between Florida State and Ohio State is all that wide, honestly, so I do think it would be possible for Ohio State to jump an undefeated Florida State in my top 25 even if it doesn’t stand a chance of happening in the major polls.

Why is that? The strength of schedule argument could actually swing in favor of Ohio State. Ironically enough it may be because of the non-conference schedule, which Ohio State often gets slammed for. Ohio State has two non-conference wins over teams heading to likely bowl games (Buffalo, San Diego State) while Florida State could have zero non-conference wins over bowl eligible teams (Nevada is ineligible with seven losses, Idaho is out with nine losses and Florida is a loss away from being ineligible with seven losses and the Gators end the regular season in Tallahassee against a Seminoles team prime for a BCS run. I don’t give either team for blasting an FCS opponent, but the Buckeyes did put up a much better offensive performance with a back-up QB than Florida State did in their match-up, although the Noles did play a much better FCS opponent. Florida State does win the conference strength argument though, although I’m not so sure the ACC is leaps and bounds better than the Big Ten.

Here is my latest top 25, which is being submitted to the SMC Top 25. My top ten makes up my power ranking ballot for this week’s Crystal Ball Run power rankings as well.
