Who made my FWAA All-American ballot in 2014

The final weeks of the college football regular season are upon us, so that means awards season is about to hit full stride very soon. With that comes a number of ballots and nominations I am asked to submit. This year I have votes and/or nominations for the Football Writers Association All-American Team, the Lombardi Award, Ray Guy Award, Lou Groza Award, Nagurski Trophy and Outland Trophy. I also get a chance to nominate a coach for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. Over the course of the next couple of weeks, I’ll share some information on whom I voted for or nominated, but today here is a look at my final All-American Team list of nominations submitted for the FWAA this fall.

These are players I have taken note of this season for various reasons. For the most part, these are the best players at their respective positions I have watched this season, I believe a couple of these players will not receive much recognition when the final team is announced by the FWAA, but I felt including them on my ballot would help to recognize a season you may have missed. For example, I am not sure how many people have paid attention to Western Michigan running back Jarvion Franklin and his 23-touchdown output this season, but he has been a big reason why the Broncos are in position to win the MAC West title this year after winning just one game a year ago. I also nominated UMass tight end Jean Sifrin, who is so easy to overlook on a struggling program, but he has carried the load at times for the Minutemen and UMass has shown improvement as the season has played out.

One player on defense that I have latched onto this season is Utah State linebacker Zach Vigil. He seems to be everywhere when I watch the Aggies and he remains one of the leaders who helped keep the ship sailing despite some key injuries on offense this season. His teammate in the secondary, Frankie Sutera, has managed to come up with a turnover at times as well. On special teams, I decided to give Penn State kicker Sam Ficken a nod, although I suspect Florida State’s Roberto Aguayo to receive the All-American recognition. Ficken has successfully kicked 22 of 26 field goals and has shown some good range. The only kicks he has missed this season were blocked, and I have never really held a blocked kick against the kicker. Ficken is one big reason Penn State has won as many games as it has, including four field goals including a game-winner in week one against UCF and three field goals in a bowl-eligibility clinching win against Temple.

Without any further delay, here is the FWAA All-American Team I nominated this season.
