UNLV has a brand new head coach in place (Tony Sanchez) and the Rebels could have a new helmet as well. This scarlet helmet has surfaced and has generated some interest as the program looks to head in a new direction. If this is legit and not just a piece of recruiting material on display, it looks great and is a nice way of going back to some fo the program’s roots.
From 1973 (if not earlier) through 1981 the Rebels wore a scarlet helmet with various designs. The “UNLV” made its first appearance on the scarlet dome in 1977 and it had been modified a couple of times before switching from “UNLV” to “Rebels” in 1982, when the color of the helmet was switched from red to gray and Randall Cunningham was doing his thing. “UNLV” returned to the helmet in 1994 and it has been in there in one form or another since. UNLV has altered the gray helmet a number of ways since switching to the color in 1982, and some of the more recent changes have been positive in my book.
It is my hope the scarlet helmet we see above (which was brought to my attention by Uni Watch) is an alternate helmet, because I do like UNLV in a gray helmet. However, I would have no problem if scarlet became the primary helmet once again for the program.
A matte finish in scarlet for UNLV would look pretty good. I also would be supportive of a reflective chrome version.
