Ship Happens: D2 coach brings team to his kids’ first day of school

Life as a college football coach means you tend to miss out on some special family moments. Shippensburg head coach Mark Maciejewski didn’t want to miss the first day of school for his kids, so he left a team meeting early. He wasn’t alone.

Nestled in the dear old Cumberland Valley, ‘neath the glowing sky, Shippensburg is a Division 2 school that specializes in early education (it has also produced NFL players John Kuhn and Brent Grimes). The campus has an elementary school located right on campus, which is convenient for student-teaching assignments. It also happened to be convenient for Shippensburg head coach Mark Maciejewski, who wanted to head over to see his kids off for the first day of school. Not wanting to miss the moment his sons started the first day of third grade and kindergarten, Maciejewski interrupted a team meeting to let his players know where he was going. Because Shippensburg stresses the importance of family, his players decided to go with him to greet students on their first day.

In a week that saw six Notre Dame players arrested and Baylor wide receiver shown on video abusing a dog and more, stories like this from Shippensburg brought a smile to my face. Hopefully, it did for you as well.

Ship happens.
