Morning Bump And Run [5.3.2012]: Notre Dame QB jailed

May 3, 2012 News No Comments

Suggested reading to start your day

Going to try and kick off a new daily feature here on No 2-Minute Warning, at least during the work week. Hey, what better day to start this off than on a Thursday, right? And is there a better way to get things started than with news of a Notre quarterback sitting in jail?

The future of Tommy Rees could see an exit from South Bend. Image source: WikiMedia.

Tommy Rees lands in jail after attempting to run from police. Let’s see. Rees attempting to run from the defense, and failing? Yeah, this seems legit. Over on Crystal Ball Run I wonder if he will be given another chance the way Michael Floyd was last season? Friend of the program Michael Felder says this could trim the Notre Dame QB race down to two players.

Also on Crystal Ball Run, a fond farewell to the WAC.

This is a couple days behind, but Heisman Pundit released the 2012 Heisman Trophy Watch List.

College football’s version of Bryce Harper is just ten years old.

Randy Shannon is suing Miami. Maybe he should go after a booster or two as well.

Rutgers takes on knight in shining armor theme with new uniforms

May 2, 2012 News 1 Comment

Rutgers gets new uniforms from Nike

A look at Rutgers' new home uniform, from Nike.

Yesterday Rutgers became the latest football program to receive an upgrade in uniform from the folks at Nike. Taking the Pro Combat style, Nike has taken away the plain red helmet and replaced it with a shiny dome, with the idea of making Rutgers football players resemble a knight in armor’s helmet.

Rutgers will have three uniform combinations, with the traditional red pants and jersey for home games, all white for road games and the awful black pants and jersey for “special” games. You know how we feel about black alternate uniforms at this point, so we won’t elaborate on it right now.

Overall the updated look looks pretty solid for Rutgers. Leaving the black uniforms out of the conversation, the home and road uniforms look pretty sharp. The knight in shining armor theme was a good idea, although a scarlet-colored helmet would still be preferable for Rutgers. You can see some influence in the new Scarlet uniforms from the Georgia Pro Combat season seen last fall, and that was given a number one seed in our Worst College Football Uniform Tournament in March. … Continue Reading

Why Arkansas hiring John L. Smith is a smart decision

Jeff Long makes a bold move with interim coaching decision

John L. Smith has potential to be a solid hire for one year at Arkansas. Image source: Weber State Athletics.

Arkansas is taking a gamble by hiring John L. Smith as an interim head coach for the 2012 season, rather than elevating an assistant already on the staff to take over the job. Smith, who was previously the special teams coach under Bobby Petrino for the past few seasons until accepting a head-coaching position with his alma mater at Weber State, will look to keep the ship on course for a potential run in the SEC, and maybe even the BCS.

Here is the situation for Arkansas. Any time a program elevates the responsibilities to an assistant coach to take on the interim coaching spot you are setting your team up for a downfall. Shuffling responsibilities on the coaching staff means putting a coach or two in a position in which they are unable to do their job to the best of their abilities, and sometimes leads to more chefs in the kitchen than you really need.

They are certainly different situations, and perhaps unfair to compare and contrast, but let’s just look at last season. Ohio State canned Jim Tressel over the summer and named Luke Fickell as the interim head coach for the 2012 season. The season did not quite go as well as Ohio State had been used to in recent years. Suspensions certainly took a toll but would the Buckeyes have had a better year if Tressel were still in charge? It’s easy to think so, is it not?

In November Penn State fired Joe Paterno and turned the program over to defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, who for the first time had to take a crack at coaching some offense. Penn State fell short at home against Nebraska, pulled out a win in Columbus and then was throttled by Wisconsin and Houston to end the season that looked to be heading to a potential Big Ten championship before Paterno was fired (some other things happened to, in case you didn’t know).

Bringing in John L. Smith, a coach with head coaching experience at the FBS level in the Big Ten and is already very familiar with the Arkansas coaching staff gives the Razorbacks the best opportunity to avoid the problems that generally come with interim head coaches. With so much riding on this upcoming season, did Jeff Long really have a better, realistic, option?

And how about that Arkansas 2012 schedule?

They have a team that is built for a SEC title run, and with that could come a shot at a BCS title for the first time in program history. The schedule is slanted downfield toward the Razorbacks, with two easy walk-throughs in weeks one and two before hosting Alabama and Rutgers. A 4-0 start is certainly not out of the realm of possibility before heading to Texas A&M, a school Arkansas has handled just fine in recent years. Getting to the bye week without a loss should be a legitimate expectation, with the Alabama hurdle looking to be the most difficult one to get by.

After the bye week Arkansas has a tough road game at South Carolina in November, but all eyes should rightly be locked in on the regular season finale against LSU, at home.

So, will Smith get the job done this season? That remains to be seen, but it certainly would be one of the top stories in college football this fall if the Razorbacks make a BCS run.

I can see it happening. So can Jeff Long.

Temple Owls put Cherry (victory) on top of spring practice

Temple’s veteran Cherry Squad defeats White, sets sights on Big East in fall

Tmeple Football Spring Cherry White Game

Temple's veteran core led the Cherry squad to a victory in the annual Cherry White Game

Big East banners were hung around the lower bowl of Lincoln Financial Field for the first time since 2004 and fans were seen wearing t-shirts proclaiming their support for Temple’s return to the Big East. The Temple Owls, preparing for a return to the conference that once abolished the football program in to independence, wrapped up their spring practices with the annual Cherry White spring game. The Cherry Squad, led by veteran players and projected starters like quarterback Chris Coyer and running back Matt Brown on offense struggled at times but finished the spring with a 17-10 victory over the White Squad.

“We didn’t have any major injuries, and I have to tell you, I feel great about that” Temple head coach Steve Addazio said. “I don’t think today was as productive as we’ve been in spring ball… but I loved being in that environment.”

VIDEO: Temple Quarterback Chris Coyer

Addazio said he was happy to see quarterback Chris Coyer play well, despite missing on some passes early and often in the game. “He didn’t miss,” Addazio said. “We dropped too many footballs today. That kind of bothered me.” … Continue Reading

2012 Coaching Carousel: Arkansas springs forward with firing of Bobby Petrino

April 10, 2012 News 5 Comments

Arkansas fires Bobby Petrino

I’ll admit, it was difficult determining if this should be added to the 2011 Coaching Carousel, but after getting some feedback and thinking it over I decided the news of Arkansas firing Bobby Petrino deserved to kickstart our 2012 Coaching Carousel. Why? With spring practices ongoing across the country and everyone ready to breakdown the 2012 season, I figured that news of the first coaching change deserved to be kept with the same season we are beginning to focus on.

Besides, I already put the finishing touches on the 2011-12 Coaching Carousel.

On Tuesday night, Arkansas officially cut Bobby Petrino loose, following a week-long saga involving a motorcycle accident, lies to hide information about a second passenger on the bike and his relationship with the woman involved in the accident. By now you know the story (if not listen to our podcast conversation with Chris Bahn from ArkansasSports360.com, The Bobby Petrino Story). In his place, at least for the time being, Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long has named linebackers coach Taver Johnson interim head coach.

During his Tuesday night press conference Long was asked if he would like to have a permanent head coach in place before the start fo the 2012 season, just a few months away, but Long was unsure exactly what the timeline would be for naming a successor to Petrino. Given the timing, it may prove difficult to find a suitable replacement, although Arkansas does have more time than Ohio State and North Carolina heading in to the 2011 season. … Continue Reading
