Memphis debuts new football uniforms for new American era

Memphis football fans are hoping that a move in to The American will lead to a winning tradition soon. The Tigers have gone just 9-39 over the last four seasons but have increased their win total over the previous year each of the past two seasons. I am not going to go crazy right now and suggest MEmphis will be challenging for the American title any time soon, but with the right kind of support from the university and a coach capable of building a foundation I do not think it is that much of a reach to suggest Memphis could become a winning program on the kind of level the program experienced ten years ago.

And if Memphis is going to start playing well, they will be dressed well as well. Memphis debuted three new uniforms yesterday as one of the highlights of a woman’s football clinic. Feel free to insert your own male┬áchauvinist fashion show jokes here guys. The new Memphis uniforms include three different helmets, three uniforms and three pants to choose from. There is nothing too crazy with the uniforms at first glance, just a clean upgrade to the overall look.

I like the new helmets. Memphis keeps their traditional blue helmet with standard logo with a tiger lunging from an “M.” A second blue helmet is added to the mix as well, with a gray “M” plastered on the side without the tiger. This is pretty significant because a tiger has been on the helmets for Memphis since 1988 according to The Helmet Project. These new helmets will feature the uniform number of a player on the right side of the helmet in place of a logo.

Of course, I’m a fan of the new chrome helmet for Memphis, which features a blue “M” on the silver chrome dome. I’m a sucker for chrome I suppose. To date, Indiana is the only school I have seen so far that has failed to impress with a chrome helmet.

In addition to the video above, Memphis also shared the first look on Instagram with a shorter video…

I’m giving Memphis high praise for the new uniforms. Nothing too out of sorts, sticking to a classic, clean look and adding variety without losing an identity. Kudos to Memphis. Now go win some football games.

Indiana introduced a handful of new football helmets last season. Some were pretty sweet, while others were not quite so impressive. Regardless of what you thought about Indiana's helmets last [...]
