This day in college football history: Arkansas outlasts Kentucky in seven overtime game, 71-63

November 1, 2012 History No Comments

On this day in 2003, Kentucky and Arkansas could not have a game decided in four quarters. Heck, they could not decide a game in four overtimes! That’s right, Arkansas and Kentucky played a seven-overtime game, with the Razorbacks coming out on top by a final score of 71-63.

The game tied an NCAA record for the most overtimes in a game, which was also played by Arkansas (2001 vs. Ole Miss). In 2002 Arkansas also played a six-overtime game against Tennessee. When this game went to overtime there must have been some Arkansas fans thinking “Not again!”

Arkansas took a 21-7 lead in to halftime but Kentucky battled back to tie the game at 24-24 when Jared Lorenzen connected with Chris Bernard with 1:38 to play in regulation. Arkansas running back DeCori Birmingham scored on a 25-yard touchdown run to open the seventh overtime, and capped it with a two-point conversion against what must have been a tired Kentucky defense. Kentucky fumbled on fourth down from the five-yard line to bring an end of the marathon game.

Arkansas requires approval for fan signs

August 20, 2012 Football 1 Comment

Yeah, this will work

Arkansas has some pretty big games on their schedule this season, including Alabama and LSU at home. With such high profile games will come plenty of media attention, so you can imagine why Athletics Director Jeff Long wants to make sure he does whatever it takes to ensure the Arkansas community is portrayed in a positive light.

That is why Long is saying that any fan who wants to bring a sign to a game this season must be sure to arrange and have their sign approved by  the school ahead of time. That’s right Razorback fan, when you come up with a witty and comical phrase to paint on your piece of poster board, you must be sure to get approval before bringing in to the stadium on game day. … Continue Reading

Arkansas black, new road uniforms leaked

Arkansas commits jersey foul

Arkansas has hopped on the black uniform band wagon, much to our chagrin. Please, America. No more black jerseys!*

The above photo was posted on NikeBlog.com on Monday, all but confirming that Arkansas will add a black football jersey to their uniform combinations in 2012. What we can see in this photo is the black jersey features white numbers outlined in Arkansas’ cardinal red. I like the number style, to be honest. On top of the number is the word “Arkansas,” which is good because these jerseys have no way of being identifiable with the Razorbacks, which is why we here will be likely to offer a thumbs down if asked. Above that is the SEC patch and Nike swoosh, with a black and red Razorback emblem at the bottom of the neckline, and Nike patented Flywire trim shooting out around the collar. The jersey will not offer much in the sleeves, thus making it more difficult for defenders to grab a hold of the jersey, giving the offensive playmakers a little extra advantage when running with the football. Every little bit helps.

One question I have for the black uniform, of course, is what will the helmet look like? Will Arkansas stick with their regular helmets when wearing this alternate jersey or is there a super-secret black helmet to be unveiled later? Or perhaps a white helmet? According to The Helmet Project, Arkansas has never worn a helmet that was a different color than cardinal. Also, will there be black pants to accompany the jersey?

Arkansas will also wear an updated version of their road jersey, which follows the same template the black jersey does as far as style goes, with some more traditional color options for the Razorbacks and a couple tweaks from the potential alternate jersey… … Continue Reading

87. The Golden Boot

100 Reasons to love college football

The winner of the annual Arkansas vs. LSU game takes home "The Boot." Photo: WikiPedia.

The rivalry between LSU and Arkansas dates back to 1901 but the 175 pound Golden Boot trophy did not come around until 1996, four years after Arkansas joined the SEC from the old Southwest Conference. The post-Thanksgiving game has become one of the more entertaining games to watch every year and has seen its fair share of memorable moments.

The first Golden Boot game went to LSU in a 17-7 decision, but the following six seasons saw the trophy exchange ownership on an annual basis. The 2007 game saw Darren McFadden rush for 206 yards in a 50-48 triple overtime thriller that was thought to take LSU out of the BCS championship picture (wrong!). It was the only time Arkansas defeated LSU twice in a row during the Golden Boot era.

LSU leads the Golden Boot series 10-6 entering 2012.

Episode 113: The John L. Smith Debate

Aaron Torres discusses Arkansas hiring John L. Smith

Is John L. Smith the right call for the Razorbacks? Getty Images.

In the history of American civilization there have been some top-notch debates worth noting.

Nixon vs. Kennedy.

Coke or Pepsi?

Great Taste! Less Filling!

Nintendo or SEGA?

Whether or not Arkansas hiring John L. Smith will ever reach those high standards in the history of great debates remains to be seen for sure, but we’ll take a stab in the dark that it will not quite reach elite status. That’s OK, because we will just throw in to the closet full of college football debates that may be more appropriate anyway.

By now you know that Arkansas named former special teams coach John L. Smith as their interim head coach, just months after Smith accepted the job at FCS Weber State. You know how I feel about it, which I reiterated on the radio last night. One of my college football pals has a different read on the situation though, so in the interest of being fair and balanced (FOX News’d) I decided to have him on to share his viewpoint. Aaron Torres, co-managing editor at Crystal Ball Run, spent some time with me this morning breaking down the pros and cons of Arkansas hiring John L. Smith.
