Western Michigan helmets take a page from Boise State

January 25, 2013 Football 1 Comment

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, or so they say. If that is to be the case, then someone at Western Michigan is a big fan of Boise State. At least, somebody is a fan of their helmets.

Western Michigan shared some images of their new football helmets for the 2013 season, and you may be quick to notice a striking resemblance to the domes worn by the Boise State Broncos, with an enlarged steed on one side of the helmet and a uniform number on the other. While the creativity is clearly lacking with the Western Michigan helmet design, it is still a solid concept that seems to work well for the… uh, Broncos. How long until the Denver Broncos catch up to this helmet design? With Nike in charge, it should not be a surprise to see something like it at some point, right?

Boise State joins the blackout uniform brigade

October 15, 2012 Football No Comments

Boise State is well known for their blue turf, all blue uniforms as well as their orange, but this weekend Boise State will be the latest school to abandon their traditional school colors and replace them temporarily with all black.

Sigh.

Boise State’s black uniforms will essentially be just like their current uniform style, which is modeled after a recent Pro Combat uniform from Nike, but will be cast in black from head to toe, including the helmet. Truth be told, it is a sick helmet…

The orange Bronco eye gives the helmet a Terminator feel to it, but I will always be ready to say hasta la vista, baby, to all black uniforms for schools who have never used black in their school colors. But the simple fact is black uniforms create buzz, and anything that will get people talking about your program seems to be the thing to do.

As far as all-black uniforms go, these helmets take the cake. But the uniform itself leaves something to be desired. … Continue Reading

Olympic field hockey to be played on Boise State-esque field

July 18, 2012 Pop Culture 5 Comments

World’s finest field hockey players will battle on international Smurf Turf

I do not know much about field hockey, and perhaps this is more common than I am suspecting. But it sure seems to me as though Boise State’s playing field has inspired others beyond the reach of college football. We have seen some interesting field surfaces in recent years, including Eastern Washington’s red field, Central Arkansas’s striped surface and, most recently, this monstrosity at the NAIA level.

Now, take a look at the field hockey facility for the summer Olympics field hockey competitions.

I thought it was a pool at first glance. HT: @RoviKelly

Congrats to you Boise State. This is your legacy.

Hype video for BYU vs. Boise State? Why not?

July 5, 2012 Video 3 Comments

The rivalry is officially on!

We have touched on the idea that Boise State and BYU could be destined to become solid rivals for years to come, and with the two schools set to meet this fall it was only a matter of time before a hype video for the game hit YouTube. Well, yesterday it happened, and this is the result…

Excuse me. I’m going to go grab a couple of Aspirin. In the meantime, feel free to share your thoughts on this video below. Did you like it or not? Are there are any other hype videos catching your eye as we get closer to the start of the season?

Episode 121 – Talking about Boise State’s future, both near and distant

July 1 is just days away and Boise State has yet to officially sign off on their withdraw from the Mountain West Conference. Could the Broncos be having a case of cold feet and leave the Big East at the altar in similar fashion as TCU? Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves there. The chances that Boise State follows through with their eventual move to the Big East are still looking pretty solid, but after witnessing the way other schools have wasted no time in taking care of their conference moves.

Some examples…

West Virginia to the Big 12 – School sues Big east to be released from conference regardless of 27-month waiting period

Pittsburgh to ACC – School takes note of what happens with West Virginia lawsuit, files their own lawsuit against Big East to assure they can leave for ACC

TCU to Big 12 – TCU accepts invite to Big East, spits on it and accepts spot in Big 12

Missouri to SEC – Missouri renovates stadium, designs new uniforms, places billboards advertising move to SEC

Texas A&M to SEC – Holds huge pep rally for SEC announcement, begins taking down Big 12 logos around campus and replacing with SEC logo quickly

I wanted to get a better perspective on what is happening surrounding Boise State as that deadline creeps closer, so I asked Brian Murphy from The Idaho Statesman to join me on the podcast. Few people have as firm a grip on the Boise sports scene than Murphy (OK, there is not a whole lot to grasp but I digress). Murphy was kind enough to set aside some time to shed some light on Boise State’s conference alignment as well as the state of the Mountain West Conference. At the time of this recording we had not heard from the BCS executives and conference commissioners on the official adoption of the four-team playoff model, but we explored that scenario anyway assuming it would go through in short time, which it clearly did.

One of the other topics we discuss include what will happen to Idaho football and what sort of timeline they are dealing with to determine what will happen with their program. Idaho is scrambling to evaluate their options as the WAC is crumbling beneath them and nobody aside from the Big Sky is looking to invite them.
