Southern Miss was 0-12 last year, so open tryouts may not be a terrible idea.

Think you have what it takes to play division one college football bu could never land a scholarship? Southern Miss may have the opportunity for you.

Southern Mississippi, the 2011 Conference USA champions who are coming off an unfathomable 0-12 season in 2012, will hold open tryouts next Wednesday, February 6. Of course, this is also National Signing Day, which might lead some to think head coach Todd Monken is struggling to put together a decent recruiting class in his first year on the job. … Continue Reading

UCLA makes history and memories in 49-24 victory over Rice

Jim Mora’s Bruins make halftime adjustments in win

UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin may have been the big story for the Bruins offense in a season opening 49-24 victory at Rice, but redshirt freshman quarterback Brett Hundley set the tone with his first career touchdown run on the first snap he took in his career.

Patiently waiting for his time to play after taking a redshirt last season, Hundley worked hard to earn the starting quarterback job at UCLA under new head coach Jim Mora Jr. Wearing a dog tag given to him by his stepmother throughout camp and winning the starting job, the dog tag may have become something of a lucky charm for the Arizona native. He wore it Thursday night in Houston and sees no reason to remove it now.

Mustangs show off new look for 2012

A lot of teams are showing off a new look this season, while others are simply just getting a minor update to their previous look. SMU falls in that second category with their new uniforms from Nike this season. Playing in their final year in Conference USA, before moving over to the Big East in 2013, the Mustangs will keep their red and white look with a minor trim of blue in parts, and that is just fine as far as I am concerned. I like SMU’s home and road uniforms, but I’d be interested to see what a blue uniform would look like, just for kicks.

SMU opens the season Sunday on the road against Baylor. Have a look at the uniforms after the jump (clicking any photo will enlarge the image, use arrow keys to flip through images). … Continue Reading

Getting you caught up on college football news

This is going to be a major day for college football changes, with a number of press conferences scheduled around the country and multiple schools to announce new conference homes. We know what those changes will be, but here is a refresher of what is going down today…

Conference USA is adding UT-San Antonio, North Texas, Charlotte, Louisiana Tech and Florida International. The Mountain West Conference will add San Jose State and Utah State. With all of the changes taking place today, in addition to the moves already scheduled for 2013, we continue to bid farewell to the WAC as a football conference.

TCU is not announcing any conference changes, although they are a few months removed from their last announcement so they may be due. TCU’s AD Chris Del Conte also rejected the notion he may be leaving for Stanford, who is now in need of an athletics director. In addition to more conference shuffling, the Big 12 will be introducing their new commissioner today. Stanford athletics director Bob Bowlsby will assume the position Friday morning.
