Nike shows off Alabama’s BCS Championship uniforms

January 3, 2013 Football 1 Comment

To the naked eye, Alabama will appear to be wearing their standard uniforms next week when the Crimson Tide take on Notre Dame for their second straight BCS championship. But upon closer inspection you will see that Nike has given a couple of new tweaks to the Alabama Pro Combat Hypercool uniform.

According to Nike, Alabama’s uniforms will be specially designed to improve temperature control  keeping Alabama players cooler than any uniform designed by Nike before. This is not so much a new feature but a feature that has gradually bene improved over the last couple of years as Nike continues with the Pro Combat line of uniforms.

Per a Nike release:

The Crimson Tide uniforms will be upgraded to include Nike Chain Maille Mesh – a lightweight, ultra-breathable material that emphasizes improved thermoregulation. This new fabrication is incorporated into the back and under the arms of the jersey for exceptional ventilation without sacrificing durability. The white-on-white look, embellished with crimson accents, creates the iconic, bold silhouette for which the Tide is famous.

Alabama will also wear the new Nike Pro Combat Hypercool Speed Top featuring Nike Dri-Fit fabrication that transports moisture and sweat from the skin to the outside of the top, leaving the body cool and dry. Regulated for the weather with increased breathability and a streamlined fit, this revolutionary baselayer top features new innovative venting systems including laser perforation pods in a unique design pattern that help the body regulate temperature. It also features reinforced bonded seams as well as premium mesh underarm gussets for increased thermoregulation.

But enough about the mumbo jumbo descriptions. Let’s get to the photos so you can check it out for yourself…

Rutgers takes on knight in shining armor theme with new uniforms

Rutgers gets new uniforms from Nike

A look at Rutgers' new home uniform, from Nike.

Yesterday Rutgers became the latest football program to receive an upgrade in uniform from the folks at Nike. Taking the Pro Combat style, Nike has taken away the plain red helmet and replaced it with a shiny dome, with the idea of making Rutgers football players resemble a knight in armor’s helmet.

Rutgers will have three uniform combinations, with the traditional red pants and jersey for home games, all white for road games and the awful black pants and jersey for “special” games. You know how we feel about black alternate uniforms at this point, so we won’t elaborate on it right now.

Overall the updated look looks pretty solid for Rutgers. Leaving the black uniforms out of the conversation, the home and road uniforms look pretty sharp. The knight in shining armor theme was a good idea, although a scarlet-colored helmet would still be preferable for Rutgers. You can see some influence in the new Scarlet uniforms from the Georgia Pro Combat season seen last fall, and that was given a number one seed in our Worst College Football Uniform Tournament in March. … Continue Reading

First Look: Oregon’s 2012 Rose Bowl Uniform

Oregon to go all-black for Rose Bowl

Wings not included. Photo credit: Nike

The Oregon Ducks, surprise surprise, are going to wear a specially designed Pro Combat uniform from Nike when they take on the Wisconsin Badgers in the Rose Bowl January 2. Nike released the photos today and it looks as though Oregon will be suiting up in all-black for the game, with a trim around the numbers and for the player name on the back of the jersey.

Honestly, these are not all that much different from their regular Pro Combat uniforms this season, seen here. The helmet is clearly different, as Nike has played on the wing idea for the uniform. Now if Oregon actually took the field with wings, like this picture would imply, then we’ll talk. But overall, this is kind of bland for Oregon, and I have to give a thumbs down overall. It’s not original and it lacks character. But I’m sure those playing for Oregon will disagree, because Oregon uniforms are always cool, right?

Honestly, I prefer last year’s BCS Championship Game Pro Combat, hands down, for Oregon. Word is Wisconsin will have a specially designed uniform for the Rose Bowl as well, and we’ll wait to see what they have in mind. Wisconsin’s uniforms are made by Adidas, the same company responsible for this year’s Michigan and Notre Dame uniforms. I don’t think it’s a great idea trying to copy Nike’s idea against the signature Nike uniform program, but who am I to say?

Should be interesting.

Stanford Nike Pro Combat Uniforms

Stanford looks for dark, ominous feel

Stanford’s Nike Pro Combat uniforms are darker and I suppose are to be menacing to their opponents. Basically Stanford will be waring a slightly darker shade of red for their uniform and will have black numbers with white trim. Most notably, the helmet is black with a red “S” on the side. Stanford has become more physical on the field with the likes of Toby Gerhart and Andrew Luck reshaping the Stanford image under Jim Harbaugh in recent years. This uniform may be a product of that new Stanford attitude.

Ohio State Nike Pro Combat Uniforms

Ohio State gets the Georgia helmet

Ohio state has another Pro Combat uniform this season and I’m still trying to figure out what is going on with the gloves. But look at the helmet. It is essentially the same design as the maligned Georgia helmets, except for Ohio State it looks a little better with it being closer to the original OSU helmets. The stripe down the middle is fattened up and black numbers are printed on the side of the helmet. The rest of the uniform stays more true to Ohio State’s regular look, as far as Pro Combat uniforms go.
