Northern Illinois fans to ESPN: Suck our oranges!

December 4, 2012 Humor No Comments

It is safe to say ESPN did not handle the fact Northern Illinois clinched an automatic spot in the BCS with what you and I would call class. I would highly advise you to check out Matt Yoder’s rant and reaction on Awful Announcing, because quite honestly that sums up my reaction as well as anybody’s to the initial response form some of ESPN’s college football analysts.

Is Oklahoma or Clemson a better team than Northern Illinois? Sure, they probably are. To me though, Northern Illinois played by the rules and met the requirements needed to earn an automatic spot in the BCS. I thought the Huskies had too far up to move in the BCS standings in the final weekend of the season so I was stunned to see they were able to sneak in following their MAC championship win over Kent State. Nebraska’s tire fire performance in the Big Ten championship game certainly was not expected and helped the Huskies, as well as UCLA and Texas losing.

Rather than embrace the Cinderella story for Northern Illinois, many seem to be using it as an excuse to continue kicking the current BCS model on its way out the door (following next season). You will not get any of that from me. I was firmly on the Kent State band wagon specifically to see a MAC team in the BCS. Remember, I thought Northern Illinois had too much ground to make up to get in. I am happy to be wrong on this one. The fans and supporters of Northern Illinois are issuing their own responses to ESPN’s reaction, as you might expect.

Jordan Lynch apparently threw an orange at a TV. This gas station delievers another message to ESPN…

Northern Illinois QB Jordan Lynch remains Heisman long shot

November 15, 2012 Football, Video No Comments

Anyone who pays attention to the MAC as much as I try to do knows exactly who Jordan Lynch is. Odds are you are also well familiar with the near impossibility Lynch will be sent to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony. Such is the life of a MAC quarterback. After all, it’s not exactly all that often a player from the conference will receive an invitation to New York City for the big night.

Jordan Lynch may still be a long shot to receive that coveted invite, but with the season he has been putting together his school is making a push for him to at least be considered among the likes of Collin Klein and Kansas State, Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, Braxton Miller at Ohio State, Marqise Lee at USC and so on.

On the heels of a big night in leading the Huskies to a MAC West Division clinching victory against Toledo, sending Northern Illinois to a third straight MAC Championship Game in a couple of weeks, the school put together and released this campaign video.

Ten Best Non-BCS Bowl Games

December 6, 2011 Opinion No Comments

Picking out the best of the not-so-best bowl games this season

Now that the bowl match-ups have been set (full schedule on Crystal Ball Run) and we have all had some time to sort through the match-ups and let some of the shock sink in (Michigan AND Virginia Tech in the BCS?), let’s see if we can pick out the best of the rest, conceding that we all buy in to the marketable idea that the BCS bowl games are in an elite class of their own.

Which games am I most looking forward to and why? Below are the ten bowl games I think have a lot of potential to be the most entertaining games, for a variety of reasons. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comment section. This list is in no particular order, so please keep that in mind when reading.

1. TicketCity Bowl: Penn State vs. Houston

OK, I can hear you now calling me a homer, and perhaps that is partly true. As you know, I cover Penn State football and I manage Nittany Lion’s Den and grew up learning about college football by watching Penn State. All of that aside, how can anyone say this match-up lacks what we all look forward to in the bow season? That being a dynamic offense like Houston’s and a leading defensive unit like Penn State’s? Oh, you want story lines on top of that? Very well then…

Will Kevin Sumlin be coaching in his final game at Houston? Will Sumlin even be coaching in the game? Will Case Keenum be able to end his collegiate career on a winning note after things went sour in the Conference USA championship game?

How does Penn State handle the situation, with Tom Bradley more than likely coaching the final game before the school ushers in a brand new coach for 2012? How do the players respond to being passed on by other Big Ten affiliated bowls after a 9-3 season? I fully anticipate Penn State and Houston to come out fired up for this game, despite some melancholy feelings right now from both sides with being in this position.

2. Outback Bowl: Michigan State vs. Georgia

The runners-up in the Big Ten and SEC will clash in the Outback Bowl, which is one of my personal favorites during the bowl season. Maybe it’s the thought of bloomin’ onions and steak, or those awesome rolls offered by Outback Steakhouse, but the Outback Bowl has been one of the better ones to watch over the years. This year should be a pretty interesting game as well.

On one sideline we have the Michigan State Spartans, who came up short in a nail-biter in the Big Ten Championship game and are looking to redeem themselves after a dismal outing in the Capital One Bowl a year ago. On the other we have the Georgia Bulldogs, who ran out of steam quickly in the SEC Championship game and hope to wrap up an 11-win season.

3. Champs Sports Bowl: Notre Dame vs. Florida State

This may not be what it once was but the fact that Notre Dame and Florida State are playing it means we can look back on some great college football games form the past. #1 vs. #2 certainly comes to mind quickly, as it was one of the first games I distinctly remember watching on television. Here we are now and Florida State and Notre Dame look like they are on the right track back to national prominence. Will this game catapult either to taking that next step in 2012? We thought Notre Dame did that last year by beating Miami, and we thought Florida State was going to be an ACC favorite this season. What will we think next summer?

4. Military Bowl: Air Force vs. Toledo

Not only will this game be heavy on the running game, it also means that it has the most potential to be done quickly. Not that we ever want a game to end early, but the game is played the same day as the Holiday Bowl and that is always a fun game to watch it seems (although it remains absent on this particular list). This game will feature the nation’s second-ranked and 14th-ranked rushing offenses, so get ready for some good, old-fashioned running plays, with a triple-option thrown in the mix as well.

5. Valero Alamo Bowl: Baylor vs. Washington

Heisman finalist Robert Griffin III will get a good stage to perform on in the Alamo Bowl. Could the game feature their first Heisman Trophy winner? Perhaps. He sure looks like the favorite (and he gets my vote of sorts), and going up against a Pac-12 defense should make for an entertaining game by RG3.

6. Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas: Texas A&M vs. Northwestern

Texas A&M failed to live up to some of the preseason hype, and Mark Sherman is looking for a new job, so I expect Texas A&M to play with a little extra fire as they prove to their new SEC rivals that they should be taken seriously in 2012. Can they set the tone in this bowl game, and avoid a second half collapse as has been a recurring theme for the Aggies this season? They’ll be in for a good battle against a Northwestern team that defeated Nebraska this season and is always likely to play hard, above their natural abilities, for 60 minutes. I’d expect nothing less of a Pat Fitzgerald-coached team.

7. GoDaddy.com Bowl: Northern Illinois vs. Arkansas State

MAC champions vs. Sun Belt champions. It may not have the national appeal as a Big Ten champ vs. an SEC champ but for those of us who committed ourselves to watching as much college football this season, including Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night college football games this is our reward for a season of MACtion and Battle of the Belts nights and conversations on Twitter. This is like our Super Bowl, or BCS Championship, in a sense as it is the next-to-last game of the bowl season. Some of us would have it no other way.

For all the GoDaddy.com girls?

8. Gildan New Mexico Bowl: Temple vs. Wyoming

Hopefully the rest of the nation gets to take advantage of this opportunity to watch Temple running back Bernard Pierce. When he is healthy he is a tough player for opposing defenses to slow down, and with Wyoming not exactly excelling in the run defense department, this could be a nice showcase game for Pierce. Steve Addazio will look to cap his first season with the Owls with an elusive bowl victory for the program. This is also the first bowl game of the season, so naturally it should be one on every college football fan’s viewing schedule.

9. MAACO Bowl Las Vegas: Boise State vs. Arizona State

So you didn’t get selected to play in a BCS bowl game, and your star quarterback, Mr. Consistency, did not get invited to New York. There is only one way to go out and respond Boise State. Unleash the inner-Bronco in you against Arizona State, a team led by the fearsome Vontaze Burfict and a Sun Devils team that will look to play with some pride after seeing Dennis Erickson be forced out the door. Will Burfict intimidate Kellen Moore? Oh man, and the uniforms… This game cannot start soon enough.

10. TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl: Florida vs. Ohio State

The Urban Bowl. The underlying Urban Meyer storyline will be the best thing about this game, and likely the only thing the broadcast crew will bother to talk about. Florida’s former head coach will be Ohio State’s new head coach in 2012 after the Buckeyes hired Meyer to be their ultimate successor to Jim Tressel. But this game has a chance to be somewhat entertaining on the field too, with a young Braxton Miller giving Buckeye fans a reason to be optimistic and Florida playing close to home, where they just about always find a way to win.

That’s my top ten. Which games would you swap out for another?

Detmer Award Ballot: TCU’s Casey Pachall out-duels Boise State’s Kellen Moore

November 14, 2011 Opinion 2 Comments

TCU’s Pachall has career day in big win in Boise

I missed posting my Detmer Award ballot last week due to covering and staying on top of the Penn State news out of State College. This week I dedicate myself to trying to get back in my regular routine, and that starts this morning with my Detmer Award ballot.

For the latest voting results on the Detmer Award, visit Saturday Blitz.

1. QB Casey Pachall, TCU

I was not necessarily surprised that TCU upset Boise State this weekend, but I had no idea TCU quarterback Casey Pachall would go off the way he did against the Broncos. Pachall’s five touchdown performance and 473 yards were both season-highs for the heir to the Andy Dalton throne under center. Consider that Pachall had thrown for over 251 yards just once this season (304 yards vs. SMU), everybody should have been stunned looking at the box-score this weekend.

People were quick to dismiss TCU this season. I get it, but the Horned Frogs are still pretty good. They lost on the road at Baylor in a shootout starring Robert Griffin III in week one and lost in overtime against SMU. Other than that, TCU and Pachall have played pretty well.

2. QB Case Keenum, Houston

Perhaps the biggest surprise in Houston’s 73-17 victory against Tulane is that it took until the 2:39 mark of the second quarter before Case Kenum contributed with a score in the game. Of course, Houston had already built a 21-7 lead by the time Keenum got warmed up. By the end of the game Keenum had put together 325 passing yards and three touchdowns.

3. WR Josh Boyce, TCU

You have to figure that when a quarterback throws five touchdowns and for over 400 yards that at least one wide receiver on that team had a standout performance as well. TCU’s sophomore receiver Josh Boyce was that player this weekend for the Horned Frogs after catching just five passes but accounting for three of TCU’s touchdowns and 163 receiving yards. Both were season highs for a player that never had more than one touchdown catch in a game this season and only had more than 100 yards once this season (134 yards vs. Louisiana-Monroe)

4. QB Kellen Moore, Boise State

His team may have lost but sometimes it is hard to pit the ultimate blame on the quarterback. Moore may not have had a lights out day as he has had this season, but Moore still managed to throw for 320 yards and complete 28 of his 38 pass attempts and throw two touchdowns. Moore did not throw an interception for the fifth game this season and it was the third time this year Moore has passed for over 300 yards. It was also Moore’s ninth multi-touchdown game (every game this season).

5. QB Chandler Harnish, Northern Illinois

We may just have to reserve a spot for Northern Illinois quarterback Chandler Harnish here every week. Maybe I was slow to really take notice of him but once again Harnish led his Huskies to victory by using the air and ground game to his advantage. Harnish completed 16 of 26 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns and carried the ball 17 times for 151 yards and one more touchdown in Northern Illinois’ 45-14 victory against Bowling Green.

Detmer Award Ballot: The MAC runs wild

October 17, 2011 Football, Opinion No Comments

MAC dominates ballot, but Kellen Moore stays on top

Houston was off this week so that means no Case Keenum to consider. That should give Boise State’s Kellen Moore a good opportunity to pad his lead in the Detmer Award this season, and did Moore ever take advantage of this.

Here is my ballot for this week’s Detmer Award voting, organized by the guys over at Saturday Blitz.

Kellen Moore excelled against Colorado State. Getty Images.

1. QB Kellen Moore, Boise State

Colorado State had the unenviable task of formally welcoming Boise State to the Mountain West Conference this past weekend. Let’s just say the Broncos were more than gracious. Kellen Moore completed 26 of his 30 pass attempts for 338 yards and four touchdowns as Boise State routed the Rams 63-13.

On a day that saw Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson catch a touchdown pass, Moore just did what he does best, and that is throw touchdown passes. Moore completed two touchdown passes of over 50 yards. What’s not to like about that?

2. QB Chandler Harnish, Northern Illinois

Candler Harnish completed just 14 of 21 pass attempts for 203 yards and did not throw a touchdown pass in Northern Illinois’ 51-22 win against Western Michigan, but he did do some serious damage on the ground. Harnish rushed for 229 yards for what I would prefer to call a Steve Young type of game.

3. RB Ronnie Hillman, San Diego State

One of the major players in the Detmer Award, San Diego State running back Ronnie Hillman, had a big night Thursday night against Air Force, by running for 172 yards and two touchdowns in an Aztecs 41-27 win. His two scoring plays came on runs of 22 and 57 yards and they each came in the fourth quarter with San Diego State clinging to a seven-point lead before the Hillman touchdowns. It was also his 11th career 100-yard game in 18 collegiate games.

4. RB Bernard Pierce, Temple

As Bernard Pierce goes, so do the Temple Owls, who moved to 5-2 overall with a 34-0 win against Buffalo. Pierce scored two touchdowns and rushed for 152 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Now healthy, Pierce has already passed his 2010 rushing total and he now has a career high for touchdowns with 17 this season. Pierce is now fifth in the nation in rushing and he may have a chance to move past Oregon’s LaMichael James this weekend if the Ducks back is still held out of action.

5. RB Morgan Williams, Toledo

Toledo’s running back has not had the greatest of seasons but I feel his week seven performance is worth noting. Morgan Williams, who I saw rush for 121 yards against Temple a couple weeks ago, eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the second time this season by going for 136 yards against Bowling Green. Williams rushed for three touchdowns as Toledo topped Bowling Green 28-21.
